It is normal in a long term relationship to go through rocky patches. You might be stuck in a cycle of conflict. One of you may have withdrawn into a shell. Sex may have dwindled down to rare moments of intimacy, or nothing at all. There may have been a significant rupture such as an affair or some other kind of betrayal. You may simply have grown apart after years of inadvertently neglecting your relationship. So many things can conspire to “get in the way” - kids, other family members, work stress, mental and/or physical illness, financial or other societal pressures.
If any of these issues resonate now may well be a good time to call upon the guidance and support of a professional to help steer you through the hard times or the impasse. Relationships by their very nature are messy and it can be hard to see a way through by yourselves. You may already be feeling like you are sinking deeper and deeper into a hole of emotional pain and despair. But please be reassured that with the right help there is much you can do to get back on track. Couples therapy, at its best, not only helps restore a sense of hope in a better future but unlocks your innate potential to thrive and grow, both as individuals and as life partners.
In order to help couples I am able to draw upon decades of good quality data that inform us why and how couples struggle and suffer. Such research has lead to a wealth of theories and modalities for couples therapists to draw on. My own way of working with couples is a carefully curated blend of some of the best well known approaches including Sue Johnson’s Emotion Focussed Therapy, The Gottman Method developed by John and Julie Gottman, and the Psychodynamic approach as brilliantly demonstrated by Clinical Psychologist Orna Guralnik in her recent BBC series. In addition, I draw upon the pioneering work of many other couples experts including Belgium psychotherapist Esther Perel, and contemporary philosopher Alain de Botton.
